III.-BENJAMIN HAMMOND 3D, OF ROCHESTER, MASS.
Benjamin4 Hammond 3d,* third son of John,3 [Benjamin,2 William1], was born at Rochester, Mass., Dec. 1, 1704, and died there Jul. 19, 1758. He built a house near that of his father, afterwards known as the Seth Mendell Place, and taken down in 1856 by John Mendell, son of Seth. He was a man of irreproachable character, and was much respected in his native town, where he held many responsible offices, being also a captain of militia. He was an active member of the Congregational Church, in whose prosperity he took a deep interest. He did not forget that his ancestors left home and friends, crossed the Atlantic, and settled in the wilds of New England, for the freedom of worshiping according to the dictates of their own consciences. He m. about 1730 Priscilla, daughter of the late Samuel Sprague of Rochester, who d. Oct. 23, 1778, ae. 83. She was a superior woman, endowed with great benevolence, and with a mind ever alive to the benefits of the poor and helpless, who found in her a friend ever ready to aid them. Issue :

5.Hannah, b. Dec. 25, 1743. d. Aug. 28, 1758.
Priscilla, widow of Benjamin Hammond, m. 2d, in 1763, Rev. Thomas West, first pastor at North Rochester.
Of the above children, Ruth, Priscilla, and Hannah all d. single at Rochester.

In the Name of God, Amen : I, Benj. Hammond of Rochester, in the county of Plymouth, in New England, Yeoman, under bodily infirmity, but in the exercise of my reason, through God's Goodness, Do make this my last Will and Testament.
And 1st., I desire to give my whole self, soul and body, to God in Jesus Christ, humbly begging his merciful acceptance, and pardon of my many sins and Reconciliation with God through the great sacrifice that was given for the remission of sins.
As touching my outward estate my will is that my true and loving wife, Priscilla, be honorably supported at equal cost between my two sons, Nathaniel and Enoch, and to live with that child she likes best. [3]
