- T 2. SAMUEL1 SHEPARD, born presumably at Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, in or before 1613, died abroad by 1673; married Hannah
He came on the Defence with his brother, Rev. Thomas Shepard, age stated on the ship list as 22, disguised as a servant of Roger Harlakenden, arriving at Boston 3 Oct. 1635. His ministerial brother, in his autobiographical account, states his arrival on that date with his wife Margaret, their child, and his brother Samuel. As "Mr. Sam[ue]ll Shepheard" he was made a freeman, along with his brother, on 3 Mar. 1635/6.
He must have been a young man of extraordinary ability. On 9 Mar. 1636/7 he was chosen Ensign of the militia company in Newtown [Cambridge]. He served as Deputy to the General Court, March, May, and Sept. 1639, May and Oct. 1640; and as Commissioner [Justice] for Cambridge, June 1641; and Deputy again, March, May, Aug., and Oct. 1645. On 18 Oct. 1645, "being to goe for England," he was dismissed from further attending the sessions of the Court. [Shurtleff, Records of Massachusetts, 1: 190, 250, 256, 271, 288, 301, 328, 371; 2: 96; 3: 9, 39, 44, 52.] He was a member of the Artillery Company in 1640.
On 16 May 1646, the High Court of Admiralty examined Samuel Sheppard of Cambridge in New England, Gent., who, aged 31, deposed that he had lived in New England for ten years.
On 29 Oct. 1650, Samuel Shepard, late of Cambridge, gave a power of attorney to Edward Collins of Medford to sell his realty, and Collins sold 6 Apr. 1658. [Middlesex County Deeds.]
In 1658 Edward Collins was Deacon of the Church of Cambridge, and that year Rev. Jonathan Mitchell entered in his list of members: "Mr" [Major written above] Samuel Shepard and His wife now living in Ireland doe yet Stand in Memberly Relation to us. And Here is with us their Daughter Jane Shepard now under the care of Mr Edw. Collins beforementioned."
