- T 4. (Rev.) THOMAS2 SHEPARD (Thomas1), born in London, England, 5 Apr. 1635, died at Charlestown, Mass., of smallpox, 22 Dec. 1677; married (recorded at Charlestown), 3 Nov. 1656, Anna Tyng, born at Boston, Mass.,
6 Jan. 1639/40, died at Milton, Mass., 5 Aug. 1709, daughter of (Capt.) William and Elizabeth (Coytmore) Tyng.
He was graduated at Harvard College (A.B. and A.M., 1653), and was later a Fellow and Tutor there. He married young; his bride belonged to a prominent family, her father having been Treasurer of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, 1640-1644. Her mother was daughter of Rowland Coytmore, who was one of the grantees of the second Charter of Virginia in 1607, and an employee of the East India Company. Thomas Shepard was ordained 13 Apr. 1659 and became Teacher of the church in Charlestown as colleague of the Preacher, Mr. Zechariah Symmes.
On 30 Aug. 1658, Thomas Brattle of Boston, merchant, with wife Elizabeth, and Thomas Sheppard of Cambridge, student, with wife Anna, the wives being daughters of Capt. William Ting, dec'd, together with Bethiah Ting, the third daughter, and Edward Ting of Boston, merchant, as guardian for Mercy Ting, the fourth daughter, of said Capt. William Ting, conveyed land to Thomas Hammond and Vincent Druse. [Suffolk County Deeds.]
On 18 Aug. 1658, Thomas Brattle of Boston and Thomas Shepard of Charlestown, Gent., sold land in Malden. Thomas Shepard on 1 Oct. 1670 bought a one-sixteenth interest in the mills in Charlestown. Anna Shepard of Charlestown, widow of Thomas Shepard, pastor of the church there, conveyed to her son, Thomas Shepard of Charlestown, as eighth interest in the mill; Margaret Shepard witnessed. The widow Anna gave other conveyances. [Middlesex County Deeds.]
The will of Thomas Shepard, dated Charlestown 5 June 1675, named his wife (executrix), son Thomas, daughters Anna and Margaret, and brothers Jeremiah and Samuel. The inventory showed a large estate of over £2686.
The will of Anna Sheppard of Milton, dated 30 May 1709, proved 7 Sept. 1709, named her granddaughter Anna wife of Henry Smith of Long Island, grandsons John Quincy and Sheppard Fiske, and granddaughters Margaret Fiske and Anna wife of John Holman of Milton; John Quincy, executor. John Brattle acted as guardian to John Quincy, the executor. [Suffolk County Probate.]
