John Crowninshield,8 (John,7 Joshua,6 George,5 Joshua, 4 Joshua, 3 William,2 William 1), b. 2 October, 1889, at Salem; d. 11 February, 1889, at Somerville, Mass. He was a merchant in New York in 1832; was first secretary of the Chicago board of trade; alderman of Chicago in 1851; and was occupied with railroads and insurance. Had charge of the land department of the Illinois Central railway some years. He m. at Milwaukee, Wis., 14 Dec., 1848, Catherine Lucretia Prentiss, b. 23 September, 1817, at Cooperstown, N. Y., dau. of John Holmes Prentiss, editor; member of congress four years; colonel of militia; and division inspector under Gov. Clinton. Her mother was Catherine Cox Morris, dau. of Gen, Jacob Morris, aid to Gen. Greene in the Revolutionary war, and son of Lewis Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, from New York. The first wife of John C. Dodge was Sarah Lang Richardson, dau. of William Putnam Richardson and Deborah Lang, b. 8 May, 1809; m. 13 June, 1839; d. 9 November, 1843. By his second wife he had one child, viz., John Holmes Prentiss9 Dodge, b. 13 October, 1850, at Chicago; graduated at Columbia college law school, New York, in 1870; admitted to the bar in New York in 1872; is a lawyer in Boston, living at Manchester, Essex Co. Height, 6 ft. ; weight, 145 to 150 pounds. The family generally tall and slender.
