- Sources: 1). "The Phelps Family of America...," 1899, by Phelps & Servin, pages 72-86, (#14). "Baptized Tewkesbury Abbey Church, 19th Aug., 1599." D. 14 Jul 1672, Windsor. W/ first wife, six children, brother George, and perhaps brother Richard, emigrated to New England in the ship "Mary & John," 400 tons, 140 pass. Sailed from Plymouth, Eng, on March 20, 1630, landed at Nantasket, now Hull, Mass, on May 30, 1630. First settled in Dorchester, Mass. In the spring of 1636, moved to Windsor, Conn. where his brother, George, had moved the prievious fall. Name is also spelled variously as FELPS, PHELIPS. (Note error for dau. Sarah, below: death, 1650, marriage 1658.)
"Search for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John,'" V. 1, 1987, by The Mary & John Clearing House, pages 50 & 72. Bpt date and place same (as is most other info) as Phelps & Servin above. Wives shown as 1) Elizabeth ______ and 2) Mary Dover. "Search for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John,'" V. 7, 1987, by The Mary & John Clearing House, pages 63-100. (Of special interest, pages 99-100.) Baptismal and death d./p. same as Phelps & Servin. He m. (1) Elizabeth ________, Eng., who died in Dorchester, Mass. early 1636. He m. (2) Mary Dover, before 1639, of the 'Mary & John,' who d. 27 Nov. 1675." "Search for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John,'" V. 14, 1990, by The Mary & John Clearing House, page 50. Bpt. dates mentioned above probably for a different William Phelps who was still in England in 1637. B. abt 1595, place unknown. By now he has THREE wives: #1) died by 1626, #2) Anne Dover, m. in 1626, Crewkerne, Eng, and #3) Mary Dover, m. about 1636. No mention as to who mothered 8 children. Similar evidence presented by Myrtle Steven Hyde, "The American Genealogist," V. 58, Oct. 1982, as part of this source.
for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John,'" V. 15, 1990, by The John & Mary Clearing House, page 52. Based on articles by Myrtle Steven Hyde in "The American Genealogist," V. 58, p. 243-244 (1982) and July 1990, p. 161-166, and research by author of this source: 1) William Phelps m. first Mary ______ who was bu. 13 Aug 1626, 2) W.P. m. second Ann Dover, 14 Nov 1626, 3) no record has been found for the death of a wife of W.P. in the 1630s or a record of a m. to Mary Dover, 4) probably no Mary Dover or another marriage in N.E., names of wives became confused, i.e., Mary and Ann Dover, and thus, if true, unnamed widow who died 21 Nov. 1675, was Ann Dover, not Mary Dover. IN LIGHT OF ABOVE, I AM ENTERING INFORMATION BASED ON THE MOST RECENT RESEARCH. THUS, MARY ______ & ANN DOVER ARE ENTERED AS WIVES. AS NO EXPLANATION HAS BEEN PROVIDED AS TO WHICH CHILDREN BY WHICH WIFE IN THE NEW RESEARCH, I'VE ARBITRARILY "PROVIDED" NEW MOTHERS BASED ON YEAR OF DEATH OF MARY.
Problems with the above due to conversion from one genealogical program to another.
